A Journey Through Time and Nature

Just a short drive from Zig Zag Motel, the Glow Worm Tunnel walking track is a family favourite and an ideal destination for anyone keen to explore natural wonders. The adventure begins at the car park at the end of Glow Worm Tunnel Road. From there, enjoy an easy 1.5km walk to the tunnel entrance, surrounded by tall forests, lush tree ferns, narrow gorges, and stunning pagoda rock formations.

The 387-meter-long tunnel was constructed in the early 1900s as part of the railway for the booming mining industry at Newnes. It's home to thousands of glow worms that create a magical light show against the dark, damp walls. The tunnel’s length ensures it becomes dark enough to see the glow worms even during the day.

Tips for an Unforgettable Experience

  • What to Bring: Hat, sunscreen, jumpers and raincoat (can be cold in the tunnel), snacks, drinking water, sturdy shoes, suitable clothing, and a torch.

  • Navigating the Tunnel: Switch off your torch to see the glow worms, and give your eyes time to adjust to the darkness. Use a red-light torch to minimize disruption to the glow worms, and keep noise to a minimum as they are sensitive to sound.

  • Best Visiting Times: The tunnel can be very busy during summer, weekends, and holiday periods, with limited parking. For a more serene experience, visit during the week, in spring, or in autumn.

  • Safety Precautions: Stay on the path to protect the glow worms and be careful in the tunnel as it can be slippery. Check for any alerts regarding track closures due to heavy rain or other hazards before your visit. (see alerts above)

The Scenic Path Beyond the Tunnel

After marvelling at the glow worms, continue on the track for another 1.5km through lush forests of eucalyptus, broad-leaved hickory, and tree ferns in the wet gully environment of Penrose Gorge. Pause at the lookout to soak in expansive views of Donkey Mountain and Wolgan Valley.

As you return, keep an eye out for goannas, lyrebirds, and vibrant seasonal flowers like yellow pagoda daisies in spring and summer and blooming banksias in the cooler months.

You'll have worked up an appetite, so don't forget to get dinner at Frankie's Restaurant; reservations are highly recommended.
